Ingredients

Cranberry-Ginger Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • 12 oz bag of cranberries
  • 1 tablespoon sliced or zested fresh ginger
  • Zest of 1 lemon

French-75 Cocktail

  • 2 oz Empress Gin
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz cranberry-ginger syrup
  • 1-2 oz sparkling wine

Equipment

  • 1 Small Sauce Pot
  • 1 spoon or spatula
  • 1 Fine Mesh Strainer
  • 1 microplane or fine zester
  • 1 measuring cup or jigger
  • 1 cocktail shaker
  • 1 Hawthorne Strainer
  • 1 cocktail glass

Instructions

Cranberry-Ginger Syrup

  • Combine the first 4 ingredients in a pot and place on the stove at medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
  • Once that happens, dump the cranberries into the pot along with the ginger (zested ginger will make a punchier syrup).
  • Let this come to a boil for roughly 4-5 minutes or until the cranberries have popped and soaked into the syrup. Turn off the heat and zest the lemon directly into the pot.
  • Strain with a fine mesh strainer into a lidded container. Throw away the caught pulp and ginger pieces. Then, set the syrup in the fridge or freezer to chill.

French-75 Cocktail

  • Add the first three ingredients to a shaker with ice.
  • Shake and strain into your preferred cocktail glass.
  • Top with sparkling wine.

Notes

  • Don’t have fresh orange juice, but still want to make this cocktail? No problem! Make a traditional simple syrup for the base of the cranberry syrup. This means a 1:1 ratio of granulated sugar to water.
  • This recipe was originally made with Empress Gin for its color, as well as its citrus and floral notes. If you’d like to use a different gin, feel free!
